EYE Believe: Glaucoma Awareness Month is hereSES, 01 March 2022
March is Glaucoma Awareness Month. This year the theme is ‘EYE Believe’.
Glaucoma NZ states that EYE Believe is “a positive affirmation to engage everyone in the action of valuing eye health education and research associated with saving sight.”
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness and, with an aging population, New Zealand’s rates of the disease are rising.
Many people have no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, and the only way to know for sure is with an eye test by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. If not treated the disease will lead to irreversible sight loss. However, with early diagnosis and treatment damage from this disease can be limited.
Glaucoma Awareness Month provides a useful reminder for many to get tested for glaucoma. If you have a history of glaucoma in your family, or if you’re over 45 and haven’t had a test in the last five years, now is the time to book an appointment.
Southern Eye Specialists provide Glaucoma NZ with financial support each year. Their work is vital in new research, raising awareness and support for those suffering from the disease. These efforts ultimately help prevent unnecessary vision loss in thousands of New Zealanders each year.
