At Southern Eye Specialists we are committed to providing exceptional care for all eye conditions.
Expert staff with international experience, leading-edge equipment and a commitment to continually evolve and grow as medical professionals allow us to deliver the most comprehensive range of eye care services in the South Island.
Each of our specialists has overseas clinical experience and have all trained in specific areas known as sub-specialities, ensuring we have a trained professional for every eye condition.
Some of the key services we offer include:
Our high-quality theatre allows us to perform minor eye surgery on site from our Christchurch clinic located in the St George’s Hospital campus in Merivale. From eyelid surgery to the removal of abnormalities from the surface of the eye, the use of a vacuum-assisted autoclave ensures we can provide a sterile environment that is comparable to any main hospital theatre.
In addition to standard vision testing we offer a range of services including automated refraction, pachymetry and eye pressure measurements, a test which assesses the risk of a patient developing glaucoma.
Visual Field Testing
Automatic visual field testing is provided using the Humphrey Perimeter machine which is a computerised assessment of your peripheral side vision. Reproducible testing of your peripheral vision is very important for diagnosing and treating glaucoma and is also important in neurological diseases.
Southern Eye Specialists is one the only private facilites in the South Island with the ability to perform Fundus photography. Photography and fluorescein angiography is undertaken for retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and inflammatory and vascular diseases of the retina. Photography is also a critical tool in the monitoring of tumours in the eye.
Southern Eye Specialists has the only specialised PDT Laser in the South Island for photodynamic therapy. This highly advanced piece of equipment is used in the treatment of vascular diseases of the macula involving special cases of age-related macular degeneration
Pre-Surgery Eye Measurements
Eye measurements are an important part of pre-op preparations leading up to eye surgery, particularly in the treatment of cataracts. The use of two different modalities or tests (axial length and keratometry) allows us to provide the most accurate measurements possible, information which is critical in determining the intraocular lens power for the surgical procedure.
Macula & Optic Nerve Scanning
Southern Eye Specialists have the very latest Ocular Coherent Tomography (OCT) machine with leading-edge software which allows us to laser scan the back of the eye, particularly the macula and the optic nerve. An OCT scan plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases relating to the macula and the optic nerve.
