<\/h3>\nWe are thrilled to announce the arrival of Dr Dickson Wong to the Southern Eye team. With a global outlook, local viewpoint, and an individually focused perspective, his expertise and experience are a perfect fit for the work here.<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr Wong provides patients with an ideal combination of skills, his subspecialities in Glaucoma and Oculoplastics enhanced thanks to a background of training and travel, curiosity and commitment.<\/p>\n First, he completed his ophthalmology training in New Zealand, following this with a two-year dual fellowship in Oculoplastics and Glaucoma at Wellington Regional Hospital.<\/p>\n Then, recognising the importance Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) would have for his work in the future, he decided to undertake another full-year Glaucoma fellowship at Birmingham Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) in England. As one of the largest tertiary ophthalmology centres in Europe, and a leading pioneer in MIGS, this was the perfect setting for growing his skillset.<\/p>\n It was a big move, especially with a young family. However, the travel proved invaluable. His time at BMEC entrenched a wealth of knowledge, expertise he now puts to good use both here at SES and as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Christchurch Public Hospital.<\/p>\n Dr Wong has also held several leadership and collegial roles. He was the chairperson of the RANZCO Trainee Representative Group. During his tenure, he advocated for better training and financial support for trainees during the Covid pandemic. He has been on the Executive Working Group review panel for RANZCO training curriculum and was a member of the General Council in RANZCO.<\/p>\n In all his work his inherent empathy and ability to connect with people continues to deliver where it matters. He takes pride in providing the highest level of care to his patients. Being multi-lingual, he can speak English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and is happy to communicate in any of these languages to ensure his patients are at ease and enlightened with every important detail.<\/p>\n Dr Wong wants to empower his patients with the knowledge to take control of their conditions. Doing so involves working collaboratively, which means that patients will often participate in the decision-making process.<\/p>\n With this approach to patient-centred care and his consummate professionalism and expertise we\u2019re all obviously excited to welcome Dr Wong onboard.
