Research

Clinical research is how medicine moves forward. Southern Eye Specialists participate regularly in clinical trials, partnering with New Zealand and international research institutions to advance the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions.

Our team has been recognised internationally for the quality of this work, and our patients benefit directly, gaining access to new treatments and technologies that are not yet widely available.

FAQs

Who can participate in a clinical trial?

Our research team carefully assesses patient suitability during an initial screening visit. Each trial has specific eligibility criteria determined by the study protocol, which may include factors such as age, existing eye conditions, general health and medication history.

What does participation involve?

Our research team will provide you with a full information sheet and invite you to a screening visit with the study doctor. If suitable, you will be asked to sign a consent form before any study procedures begin. You will then attend scheduled clinic visits throughout the study, where your progress will be closely monitored.

What are the benefits of participating in a clinical trial?

Participants may gain access to new treatments before they are widely available, receive additional monitoring from our specialist team, and contribute to research that benefits future patients in New Zealand and around the world.

How long does a clinical trial last?

Duration varies by study. Some trials are completed within a few months, while others may span a year or more. The full time commitment will be explained clearly before you are asked to make any decision.

Is there any cost to participate?

Study-related treatments, procedures and clinic visits are provided at no cost. Reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses may also be available. Full details will be outlined before you agree to take part.

What happens if I change my mind?

Participation is entirely voluntary. You may withdraw at any time, without giving a reason, and without affecting the care you receive from our team.

Will I find out the results of the trial?

Results are typically available some time after the study concludes once data has been fully analysed. Where possible, participants will receive a summary of the findings, and you will be informed at the outset how and when results are expected to be made available.
