Southern Eye becomes a Gold Sponsor of Cancer Society Southern
In NZ, one in three people will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Despite this statistic, the news rarely arrives without surprise. The effects ripple through the daily lives of patients and their families – and wraparound support during such a challenging time is invaluable. This is one of the key reasons why SES have now come on board as a gold sponsor of Cancer Society Southern.
No one should face cancer without support. The Cancer Society is one of the organisations walking alongside those who have been diagnosed. They provide free support services, transport, accommodation, and help fund the research that shapes the future care for patients.
The Cancer Society receive no direct government funding, this important work relying entirely on the generosity of individuals and businesses. Annual Daffodil Days, community events, and year-round fundraising are what makes it possible for people to access help when they need it most. Corporate sponsorship is crucial also.
The Southern Eye team understands the importance of such work. After patients are referred from GPs, optometrists, dermatologists, and other specialists, our team of oculoplastic surgeons diagnose and treat cancer on and around the eye area. It’s a complex process and can involve everything from tumour removal through to reconstructive surgery and management of side effects.
SES surgeon Dickson Wong regularly provides such treatments.
“One of the main focuses for oculoplastic surgeons are eyelids, including reconstructive surgeries,” says Dickson. “Our primary goal is always to fully remove the malignancy while ensuring the eyelid functions perfectly afterward.”
“Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most common types of eyelid cancer, and meticulous care is essential when removing any lid malignancies,” he says.
